LED Marketing Myths

Sadly, the LED grow light industry is drowning in misinformation. Unless you spend a ton of money on LED grow lights, or perhaps find a source
you really trust to show you their lights in action, you’ll need to look very hard at the facts presented to you by the manufacturer or vendor to make a purchase decision. Perhaps the best way to start is to identify some of the erroneous (either through ignorance, or sheer malice) “facts” being presented within the industry.

MYTH #1: CHINESE LEDS ARE INFERIOR

Almost all LEDs are manufactured offshore, many in China. While it is true that some inferior products have come from offshore sources, many Chinese companies have excellent track records for electronic devices and especially, LEDs.

MYTH #2: “VENDORS” ARE THE SAME AS “DESIGNERS” AND “MANUFACTURERS”

Weeding out “vendors” from true designers and manufacturers may be confusing. In practice, about 90% of the LED grow lights advertised come from the same few companies in China. This is not to say that there is anything wrong with these companies, or their products. China is producing some commendable lighting products. You may have seen some of these out there: “UFO” lights, “Spider” lights, various box lighting and a LOT of interior lighting re-purposed to serve as grow lights. Our fundamental problem lies with companies that claim to be the designer and/or manufacturer but are instead re-sellers of mass-produced equipment.

MYTH #3: “MADE IN THE USA”

Another huge problem in the US grow light industry is a claim of “Made in USA.” However, this problem is declining as the Federal Trade Commission cracks down on offenders. According to the Federal Trade Commission, “Made in USA” may only be used if all, or virtually all of the components are sourced and manufactured in the USA. This is highly unlikely with any LED product, as almost all LEDs are manufactured offshore now. The same goes with power supplies. 70 Face facts – if a grow light was manufactured entirely in the USA, no one could afford them. Companies that break this rule could be in some big trouble.

MYTH #4: YOU NEED TO USE FANS WITH LEDS

Yes, you can increase power to the LEDs
